ChatGPT Atlas alternatives

Updated

OpenAI shut down ChatGPT Atlas on August 9, 2026 Source 1. You don't need another AI browser to replace it: OpenAI's successor, the ChatGPT desktop app, can work in your own browser through its extension Source 2. Claude and Gemini add an agent to Chrome, and Perplexity Comet is the full-browser swap. BrowseWiz fits when the job ends in a Google Sheet.

What replaced ChatGPT Atlas, and where its jobs go now

OpenAI launched Atlas on macOS in October 2025 Source 3, and it never shipped for Windows Source 1. OpenAI announced its retirement on July 9, 2026 Source 4, and it shut down on August 9 Source 1. ChatGPT agent is retired too. OpenAI now points to ChatGPT Work, an agent for multi-step tasks Source 5.

Work runs on the web, on mobile and in the new ChatGPT desktop app Source 6 for macOS and Windows Source 7. It browses in three ways:

  • Built-in browser: inside the desktop app, with its own sign-ins rather than your Chrome profile Source 8.
  • Cloud browser: a remote browser on paid plans other than Go that keeps working after you close your computer Source 9. You sign in to sites inside it, and the sign-in lasts for later tasks until it expires Source 9.
  • Browser extension: set up from the desktop app, for Chrome, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Microsoft Edge Source 2. It can read or act on sites where you're already signed in Source 2.

Five alternatives to ChatGPT Atlas

Four add an agent to the browser you have. Comet replaces your browser, as Atlas did. So do other AI browsers, such as Dia Source 10 and Opera Neon Source 11.

  • ChatGPT desktop app and extension. OpenAI's own successor, with the three ways to browse above.
  • Claude in Chrome. Anthropic's agent in a Chrome side panel, on paid Claude plans. It can repeat tasks on a schedule while Chrome is open Source 12.
  • Gemini in Chrome. Built into Chrome. Auto browse needs Google AI Pro or Ultra and, for now, a US English setup Source 13. Gemini Spark schedules tasks Source 14.
  • Perplexity Comet. The closest swap for Atlas: a full AI browser for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android Source 15.
  • BrowseWiz. A Chrome extension that keeps a Google Sheet current from sites you're signed into, on a schedule, and watches pages for the changes you describe.

Apartment hunting, kept in a Google Sheet

OpenAI lists finding and saving apartment listings as a job for its cloud browser, which can run it with your computer closed Source 9. BrowseWiz runs it in your own Chrome while Chrome is open, and keeps every listing in one Google Sheet:

What you type

Open my saved searches on Nestwell and Keyhaven for 2-bedroom apartments under $2,100. Keep a Google Sheet with address, rent, site, the date each listing first appeared and its link. Mark listings that are gone as "Off market" in a Status column.

The first run creates the sheet in your Google Drive. Once it's scheduled, each run adds new listings and marks the ones that are gone.

The sheet on Thursday, after two daily runs

How BrowseWiz works in the Chrome you have

  1. Add it to Chrome

There's no new browser or desktop app. BrowseWiz works in your own tabs, with your logins.

  2. Approve the first run

Paste the prompt in chat and approve the plan it shows. Then grant tab access and sign in to Google once when asked, and it creates the sheet.

  3. Let it repeat

Click Update this sheet daily after that first run and answer its two questions, or ask for a time such as every morning at 8. Then approve the new plan. It's saved as a scheduled task, and scheduled runs don't stop to ask. For a faster heads-up, a page monitor on one saved search, such as "tell me when a 2-bedroom under $2,000 appears", checks about every 5 minutes. A check that finds no change makes no AI model call.

Which one fits

Choose ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini if…

  • You already pay for one.
  • Tasks must keep going with your computer closed. ChatGPT's cloud browser Source 9 and Gemini's remote browser Source 14 can.
  • You want task results by email, which ChatGPT offers Source 20.

Choose Comet if…

  • You liked having a whole AI browser, as Atlas was.
  • You want it on Windows or on your phone Source 15.

Choose BrowseWiz if…

  • The job ends in a Google Sheet that BrowseWiz creates and keeps current.
  • You want it in Chrome without a desktop app. ChatGPT's extension is set up from its desktop app Source 2.
  • You want a page checked about every 5 minutes on a free plan. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT Free tasks, monitoring ones included, run at most once a day Source 20.

Where BrowseWiz falls short

  • It's built for Chrome. ChatGPT's extension covers five browsers Source 2.
  • Schedules and monitors run only while Chrome is open.
  • If a site signs you out, a scheduled run lands on the sign-in page until you sign in again in Chrome.
  • Monitor alerts are a side panel notice, a pill on the page or a system notification, not email.
  • It writes to sheets it creates, not to a sheet you already have.
  • Your own key works in chat only. Schedules and monitors always use BrowseWiz Chat.
  • It's an AI agent, so two runs can differ. For thousands of URLs, proxies or captchas, use a cloud scraper. You're responsible for following each site's terms.

BrowseWiz starts at $0 with a daily task and a page monitor, and Pro is $29 for hourly tasks and 30 monitors:
