Keep a lead list from directories fresh in Google Sheets

Updated

Ask BrowseWiz to read a directory or member list into a new Google Sheet, one row per company with its website, city, phone and listing link. A weekly scheduled run then updates that sheet while Chrome is open: it adds new companies, marks the ones no longer listed and updates the rest in place.

Ask for the lead list once

Say you sell packaging to food producers, and your state's food manufacturers' association lists its members online, a page per member. A bought list goes stale, and copying the directory by hand takes a day you'd rather spend calling.

What you type

Open the member directory at foodmakers-ohio.example/members and go through every page. For each member, open its listing and get the company name, website, city and phone. Create a Google Sheet called "Ohio food makers" with the columns Company, Website, City, Phone, Listing and First seen, one row per company. Put the link to the member's listing in Listing and today's date in First seen.

Swap in your directory's link. Ask only for what its listings show: BrowseWiz writes what's on the page and doesn't look anyone up. If the directory is for members only, sign in to it in Chrome first.

The lead sheet after the first run

BrowseWiz creates the sheet in your Google Drive, one row per company. The Listing column links each row to the page it came from, so you can check any phone number before you call.

How it works

  1. Describe the list

Name the directory, the columns and the sheet. Paste the request into the side panel.

  2. Check and approve the plan

BrowseWiz replies with a plan: how it pages through the directory, what it opens for each member and which columns it writes. Nothing runs until you approve. Then grant tab access and sign in to Google once when asked.

  3. It reads the directory in your Chrome

It opens the pages in the BrowseWiz Tabs group, using the sessions you already have, and never asks for your passwords. See how the browser agent works.

Every Monday, the same sheet, kept fresh

After the first run, send one more message: "Every Monday at 8:00, update this sheet from the directory. Add a row for each new member, with today's date in First seen. For members already in the sheet, update their website, city and phone in their row. Add a Status column, and write Not listed for members the directory no longer shows. Don't delete any rows." Approve the plan, and BrowseWiz saves it as a scheduled task without running it now. Each Monday after that:

  1. New members get a row

A company the sheet doesn't have yet gets a new row, with that Monday's date in First seen. Filter on the date to see this week's new leads.

  2. Changed details are updated in place

When a member's website, city or phone changes, the run writes the new value into that company's row. You keep one row per company, not a second copy.

  3. Members that left are marked

When a company drops out of the directory, its row stays, with Not listed in Status. You keep the history, and you know not to pitch a company that closed or left.

  4. You hear when it's done

Each run alerts you in Chrome when it finishes or fails, so a week that went wrong doesn't pass unnoticed.

A one-off scrape, a list vendor or BrowseWiz?

Choose a one-off scrape if…

  • You need the list once, for one campaign, and won't look at it again.
  • A CSV file is the end of the job, and a free scraper extension or a freelancer already gets you the rows.

Choose a list vendor if…

  • You need thousands of companies across a whole market, not the members of one directory.
  • You want named contacts, their emails or company size added to each row. That's data a directory page doesn't show.

Choose BrowseWiz if…

  • Your leads are in a directory you trust: an industry association, a chamber of commerce or a member list you can sign into.
  • You want the list kept fresh, with new members added each week and the ones that left marked, without starting over.
  • You want to name the columns in plain words and keep the sheet in your own Google Drive.

What to know before you start

  • Hundreds of rows, not thousands. BrowseWiz reads the directory page by page in your Chrome, the way you would, so it fits a list you'd otherwise copy by hand. For thousands of companies, use a list vendor or a cloud scraping service.
  • Only what the pages show. It writes what the listings display and finds no hidden emails. It doesn't guess addresses, look people up or add data from other sources.
  • Chrome has to be open. Scheduled runs happen only while your computer is on and Chrome is open. This isn't a 24/7 service.
  • The directory's terms apply. Many directories limit copying or reusing their listings, and some block automated visits. Read the terms before you schedule a run: you're responsible for following them.
  • Named people's details are personal data. Data about a company isn't covered by the GDPR, but a person's name, work email or direct phone is, including at work Source 1. Privacy rules such as the GDPR apply to those details, so collect only what you need and check the rules where you and your leads are. This isn't legal advice.
  • Check the first two scheduled runs. An AI model carries out each run from the approved plan, so results can vary. Make sure there's still one sheet, with one row per company.
  • Layout changes and sign-ins. If the directory changes its layout or signs you out, a run can miss members or land on a sign-in page. The Listing link in each row lets you check any value.
  • A sheet BrowseWiz creates. It writes the leads into a new sheet in your Google Drive, and each run updates that one.

What it costs

Start on Free: it includes one scheduled task that runs up to once a day, one monitor and 10M credits a month. Credit use depends on how much page text each run reads, so opening every member's listing uses more than reading one long list.
