Voice input
Dictate your message instead of typing it. The mic button (Voice input) sits in the chat input's bottom-left icon row, next to the attachment and screenshot buttons.
Recording a message
- Click the mic to start recording. The mic turns red and pulses.
- Speak your message. The language is detected automatically.
- Click the mic again (Stop and send) to stop. The mic shows a spinner while your recording is turned into text.
While the input is empty, it also reads Listening… while you record and Transcribing… while the text is on its way. When you have typed something, your text stays in the input, so the red mic and then the spinner are the only cues.
A recording can be up to 2 minutes long. At 2 minutes, recording stops on its own and the recording is transcribed.
What happens to the text
- Empty input: if the input is empty when the text arrives and no response is being generated, the text is sent right away, as if you had typed it and pressed Enter.
- Input with text: if there is text in the input when the text arrives, the text is added after it and nothing is sent, so you can review it first. The same happens while a response is being generated.
- 2-minute limit: when recording stopped at the limit, the text goes into the input and nothing is sent.
- Nothing heard: if no words were recognised, nothing is sent and a notice says Didn't catch that — try again.
- Transcription failed: if the recording can't be turned into text, nothing is sent and a notice says Couldn't transcribe the recording. Try again.
Discarding a recording
Press Esc while recording to stop and discard it. Nothing is transcribed or sent.
The mic is unavailable while a response is being generated and while you are selecting a screenshot area.
Microphone permission
The first time you use voice input, Chrome needs your permission to use the microphone. BrowseWiz opens a new tab headed Enable voice input, with an Allow microphone button:
- Click Allow microphone and allow access in Chrome's prompt.
- When the tab says Microphone enabled. You can close this tab and click the mic again., close the tab and click the mic in the side panel again.
If access is blocked, allow the microphone for BrowseWiz in Chrome's site settings, then click the mic again. If no microphone is connected, a notice says No microphone found. If recording can't start for another reason, a notice says Couldn't start recording.
Limits
Unless you have set your own OpenAI API key, voice input uses your BrowseWiz plan's credits. If you reach a usage limit, a notice says so and, when it is known, when voice input is available again. If your monthly quota is reached, a notice offers an Upgrade button.
