Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)

With Bring Your Own Key, you can connect your own OpenAI API key to unlock access to whichever OpenAI models your key can use directly within BrowseWiz. Requests to these models go straight from your browser to OpenAI and are billed to your OpenAI account.

Supported Models

By providing your OpenAI API key, BrowseWiz lists the models your key has access to under BYOK models in the model menu and lets you pick from them. Which models that is depends on your OpenAI account, not on BrowseWiz. The list shows every model on your account, including ones that can't chat, such as embedding or speech models, so pick a chat model.

If you need a model your key doesn't include, or one from another provider, add it as a custom model instead: any endpoint compatible with the OpenAI Chat Completions API works. See OpenAI API-compatible endpoints.

Setup

1. Generate an API key at platform.openai.com/api-keys
2. Open Options → Models
3. Enter your API key in the OpenAI API Key field of the BYOK section. It is saved as you type. Click Check to test it.
4. Open the model menu at the left of the chat input and pick a model under BYOK models

OpenAI API keys start with sk-. A saved key that doesn't start with sk- isn't used.

If the models can't be loaded, for example because the key is wrong, the menu shows "Couldn't load models for your OpenAI key. Check it in Options → Models." under BYOK models. It tries again each time you open the menu.

Your API key is encrypted and stored securely in your local extension storage. It is never sent to BrowseWiz servers. It stays in this browser only: it isn't backed up or synced to your other browsers, it stays when you sign out, and it isn't in the data export.

Chatting with a BYOK model

• Thumbs-up and thumbs-down ratings appear only on replies from BrowseWiz models, not on BYOK replies.
• Every tool you have turned on is offered to the model. Turn tools off in the Tools menu for a model that doesn't support tool calling.
• Whether the model can read attached images depends on the model.

What else uses your key

While a key is saved, voice input and Read aloud (AI voice) in the message menu also use it, whichever model you pick: the audio or text goes straight to OpenAI instead of using your BrowseWiz credits.

The Browser Use Agent, scheduled tasks and monitors don't use your key. They always run on BrowseWiz's own models.
